聯合國難民署（UNHCR）28日表示，今年試圖越過地中海前往歐洲的難民或非法移民已超過30萬，其中約有2500人在上岸之前失蹤或死亡，而且這個數字還不包括27日在利比亞海岸翻覆的兩艘偷渡船，約有200人下落不明、恐已葬身海底。

聯合國難民署的最新報告表示，今年雖然9月都還沒到，但偷渡地中海的難民和移民人數大幅上昇，目前已逾30萬人。其中大約20萬人選擇前往希臘、其餘約11萬則是前往義大利。去年一整年從地中海進入歐洲的非法移民僅21.9萬人，可見情勢惡化之嚴重。
根據申根機構的統計，今年上半年大約有10.2萬名外國移民從馬其頓、塞爾維亞、波士尼亞、阿爾巴尼亞、黑山、科索沃進入歐洲。去年同期的數字是8千人。法新社稱說，今年上半年在歐盟國家申請避難的人數，比去年同期增加了6倍。
