It didn't go well. I really put my foot in my mouth."John嚇了一大跳,誰會開會的時候這樣啊?

I really put my mouth in it."

emollient

As a social emollient, he succeeded in resolving the conflicts between the two companies and won the contract for his boss.

turn/go sour

After he got caught in a lie, their friendship went sour.

throw sth in(to) one’s face

Jerry caused this mess. I'll throw the whole problem into his face and tell him to fix it.
Jerry

take issue with sb.

The legislator took issue with the mayor over his new transportation policies.

take sth in one's stride

A politician would better learn to take criticism in his or her stride.

Put sb at his ease

Sally's sense of humor put him at his ease.
