英式英語和美式英語在發音上有何不同？我通常回答：「粗略來分，有些美國人捲舌的音，英國人是不捲的，例如 car, bird, girl…」
想想，還有點像京片子兒話音和台灣休閒國語，翹舌和不翹舌。我的外籍朋友都能區分這兩種口音的中文，除了Gordon 。
某天，Gordon 從公司打電話，叫我教他一句點餐的中文，因為他想去路邊攤吃中飯。
“ Honey, how do you say pork fired rice in Chinese?”
“ You say 豬肉炒飯，again，炒～飯～”
我進行電話教學，還提醒他記得捲舌，四聲別走音。
「豬～肉～炒～飯～」
我們反覆練習發音，搞得我好像在外太空訂便當似的。
罷特，當我下課回到家，發現這位英國大師一臉不法喜，劈頭就抱怨：
Gordon： I was embarrassed when ordering my lunch at a street food stall.Because the Chinese word you taught me on the phone was wrong.Nobody understood what I said.
(我在路邊攤點中飯時好糗，因為妳在電話教我的中文是錯的，沒人聽懂我在說什麼）伊凡： You mean…炒飯 for fried rice?
（你是說炒飯嗎？）Gordon： Yes, the owner of the food stall even told me the food I wanted to eat was actually 草幻，and I heard all the diners there say 草幻！
（對啊，小吃攤老闆還說我點的是草幻，我也聽到那裡的客人都說草幻）伊凡： Oh no, you don’t really think 草幻 is the right word for fried rice, do you?
（完了，你不會真以為草幻是fried rice的正確中文吧？）Gordon： I finally said 草幻 to get my lunch.
（我最後說草幻就吃到中飯）伊凡： …………
看到這個歪果人認真說台灣國語的模樣，又擺出不信任老婆的態度，偶港覺四態粉嚴重～如果有機會帶外國朋友去路邊攤吃美食（當然不只是吃草幻啦），試試以正確發音和聲調，為他翻譯老闆常說的話：
1. 要不要加辣？
Do you want to add chili to your food?
Do you like it spicy or not spicy?
2. 如果你不喜歡香菜，要事先跟廚子講。
If you don’t want coriander in your food, tell the cook in advance.
3. 這家自助餐的菜是用稱重的。
The dishes in this self-service cafeteria are sold by weight.
4. 臭豆腐通常附上泡菜
Stinky tofu is usually served with kimchi.
說了一連串英語之後，居然還被問道「Excuse me，你剛說的是英文嗎？」
該捲舌的音沒捲，該用的字講錯，常讓聽眾懷疑你說的到底是英語還是外星話。問題就是出在發音，發音，發音（因為很重要，所以要講三遍。）
